(I hope Mike "RavingMac" sees this.)

Read thru his steps. It's not quite as easy as we have been told by Macworld and some other Mac pundits. Lots of disassembly including the removal of the logic board.

It appears Apple's warning about voiding your warranty if you do it yourself may be for a good reason.

Lots of screws and nothing is glued down, so for anyone reasonably handy, this should be easy work. Replacing the HDD on my iMac took WAY more effort.

    Thanks, Charlie
Actually, I had already seen it on iFixit. The job doesn’t look beyond my skill level (used to be a repair tech many many moons ago), but having looked at OWC’s price for RAM there isn’t enough savings for me to justify messing with doing it myself.
I plan to purchase through the govt site, saves about 10%
I've always wanted to be smart, handsome and modest. But, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with two out of three . . .

Good decision. That's how I purchased my 2017 iMac. I wish our local Navy Exchange/BX stocked a better variety of Macs. It seems they only stock the entry level models for MacBook Pros and very few iMacs. The savings at a local military exchange can be substantial because it's not only 10% less but also no sales tax.

If you order from the online govt site you can have them ship to your home, or pick it up at your local Apple Store.

I’m surprised the BX won’t let you order an upgraded version

EDIT: I’m mainly waiting for the Mac Mini to get in peoples hands so I can read reviews and comments before buying one. In particular I’d like to see some real world performance comparisons so I know which CPU to go with

That's what I did with the iMac. I ordered it from the Govt site and had it delivered to my home. As far as I'm aware, the BX does not special order Apple items - like an upgraded model. What you see is what you get. LOL.
