Helping a friend fix his daughters iMac
Hello everyone and thank you for any help you can offer.

    I'm working on a 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo A1225 EMC 2211

We don't know what she did to it, but it won't boot to the desktop.

It boots to a screen with 4 options:

    Restore From Time Machine Backup
    Reinstall OS X
    Get Help Online
    Disk Utility

I tried reinstall OS X, entered my apple id and password, came back and said the service is temporarily unavailable, or something like that.

    Disk utility shows (attached image)

I tried to boot from a 10.5 DVD , but it just showed an O with a slash through it, as if to say, no way pal.

    What should we try next?

From the image in your post, it appears the hard drive has died.

Please backup. Everything has a life cycle, unexpected and warning free. Nothing will last as long as you want it to.
