Hi, this is my first thread and also my first Mac Pro and I have a few questions about RAM and CPU upgrade. I bought one a few days ago, blank, installed Ubuntu Server 18.04 + KDE and found these information:
It is a Mac Pro 2,1. Version: MP21.88Z.007F.B06.0707021348. Intel Corporation 5000X Chipset Memory Controller Hub according to dmidecode and lspci commands
I need to know, is it true it can go up to 64GB of RAM using the 3,1's RAM or I can take only 32GB? I need to upgrade it only has 2GB of RAM, is the 800MHz ones compatible?
Also, is there better than the pair of Xeon X5365 for my Mac Pro or the 2,1 can take better?
Thank you

G'day Doc and welcome to the forums.

Well if it is a Mac Pro 2.1 it should have dual 3GHz CPU's, 5300 series and will handle up to 32GB of 667MHz PC2-5300 , DDR2 fully buffered DIMMS in matched pairs. Macs are very fussy about memory so suggest not buying on eBay or PC shops. I said 'if' as some years ago there was a very popular firmware update which changed the model 1.1 to read a 2.1 without improving anything. The 1.1's were either a 2.66 or 2GHzCPU. I had uodated the 1.1 to 5355 processors which was a reasonable improvement. Ber aware natively a 1.1 oe a 2.1 will run up to Lion OS X.7 only. There are a number of kext hack procedures around the 'net, but one must consider turning it ninto an expensive door stop if things go wrong.

Thanks for the information
According to the previous owner, it is a 1,1 "hacked" into a 2,1 and it came with the Dual-core Xeons 5150 2.66GHZ
For memory I will use Samsung only
For Mac OSX, I will never install it so compatibility and else are no concerns to me (Debian guy here)
I have found 800MHz sticks for cheap and wonder if it will do like regular PCs, slow it down to 667MHz
