Hi everyone, I'm just wanting to know which Mac Pro 5,1 (12 core) is the best to have?

Where was several processors used as well as varying ghz speed, and I wanted to know, out of all the 12 core Mac Pro's (before the trash can style), which ones would you recommend to get?

Also, do you know if it would run Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!!

The best of that Mac Pro with the highest GeekBench Test Score is the 3.07GHz model and that is the model I would aim at.

No Snow Leopard will not run on that model, the absolute minimum is Lion OS X.7 and personally I would never run that on such a great machine. For mine the minimum would be Sierra, and if one or more SSDs are installed, High Sierra OS X.13.

What do you want to do with it? Harry has already given you some excellent advice. Knowing what you intend to do with it will help advise you.

Hey there, i have the original snow leopoard install disks...and am currently running 10.6.8...couldn't i just do the updates to get passed the minimum requirements of X.7 ?

I'm looking to beef up the 5,1 for further video work with FCP, resolve, handling 4k video etc....

No you cannot run old antiquated Snow Leopard. Only sluggish Lion which is why I suggested Sierra or High Sierra if SSD installed.

If you are planning to run FCP with 4k video you will need a more up to date version of OS. I recommend at least Sierra. You will find 4k will tax your system. Also when Lion was developed I believe 4k video was not in use yet.

With 4k the more beefy the system the better.

Hmmm…??? According to everymac.com the Mac Pro 5,1 models I looked at can all run SL 10.6.4+.

Just saying…

Kinda irrelevant Patrick. Even if it can run SL I would be willing to bet 4k video editing would be a no go.

I run Premiere Pro and when my first 4k project came in that is when I found out version CS6 would not edit it. I had to update to the pay monthly version CC or change everything over to FCP X 10. New and better cost!

Good to know Lisa, but it was just in answer to the OP's question about SL 10.6.x running in their post #1.

I realized you were just trying to answer him. :D.

I started using macs when the version of OS was Mountain Lion. I never developed the devotion to Snow Leopard that I have gathered some people have. From what I have read it seems it was a very popular version and some still use it regardless of a lack of updates.

Yes it was and can still be very useful and as for "updates", the last time I checked some of our SL capable Macs, their "XProtect" files had been updated fairly recently, so I imagine that carries on, even though Apple says it's "unsupported". The XProtect protection is still being updated.

The built-in anti-malware protection on Mac OS X is known as “XProtect,” which is technically a feature built into “File Quarantine.” This feature was added back in 2009 with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

That's true for the mid-2012+ models, but the earlier mid-2010 which are also MacPro5,1 models, can do SL, but why bother I guess from what Lisa's experience was with any high-end graphics stuff.

Did you have any such experience with your Mac Pros???
