How to check my audio jack on Mac Pro?

Hey everyone, I've wanted to be able to do simple voice recordings with Quicktime on my Mac Pro (3,1) (running OSX 10.6.8) and plugged in a working cable into my input / mic 1/8" cable in the back of my tower.

When i go to sound as well as Audio Midi setup, none of the level indicators are moving when i talk into the mics. The levels are up, and i just tested the small mic on my guitar amp, so i know it works.

Any way of doing a diagnostic test on the input jack itself, or any other test that could help me out?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Have you tried the headphone jack in the front to see if that works? Secondly, are you ensuring to plug into the input port on the back as opposed to output? I don't have a ton of experience with a Mac Pro, but there are couple of members here who have them, so they should chime in with better things to check.

Hey there, thank you for replying back.

I actually tried a few other mics and cables, and found out that the cable i was using was faulty. My input jack works and i do get signal.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Thank you for the help though!!

Excellent! Old cables are prone to issues for various reasons, but glad you're back in business.
