2012 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM
My Mac Mini is now 5.5 years old and starting to struggle with general day-to-day activities and iMovie video editing. As there is no sign of a new Mac Mini I need to replace it with another Mac of some kind. However, all of the other Macs are very expensive. I want to keep my 34-inch curved monitor and other accessories like my Logitech webcam, Apple wireless keyboard and mouse.

So, with that in mind, what would you go for to get a decent upgrade from my current Mac Mini in terms of sheer horsepower whilst keeping my existing accessories and monitor? It's spec is as follows:

  • Mac Mini (Late 2012)
  • Intel i5 2.5GHz
  • 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
  • 2 x 500GB HDDs
  • Intel HD graphics 4000 1536MB

What is your budget got a replacement? If you are want to keep all of your accessories, then you are looking at the latest generation Mac Mini as likely your best option. The biggest downside to the Mac Mini is the dual-core CPU. To do any serious level of video editing, you need a CPU and GPU combination coupled with enough RAM.

The Mac Mini is a tiny power-horse for everyday tasks (browsing, document creation, playing music, etc.) but it will begin to falter on any serious work.

Budget is about 2,000 GBP. I spoke to Apple Customer Services and they recommended an iMac.

Just put an SSD in as your main drive. Other than that, the only other option available at this time is the Late 2014 Mac mini, https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/, or refurbished units, https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_mini.

I did put an SSD into my Mac Mini last year and it failed within a few weeks - a complete hardware failure. I then replaced the SSD with a 500GB HDD and restored via a Time Machine backup. The original 500GB HDD is my second drive.
