Dowloading xcode form apple store

I have been trying to download xcode from the apple store. It seems to be downloading because I see a circular icon twerling around but it never stops and I see no indication of how much time is left before the download will be complete. It has been two hours.

How do I get an indication of the time left, and how do I know that it is downloading?

How large is the xcode download and what speed is your connection at? You should see some indication of the download progress in your download folder on the Dock. Usually, you will see a small bar going from left to right that gives an indication of the progress. Depending on your router-modem, you might also get an indication of the download by blinking or flashing lights. Not all router - modems give that indication though.

If you open the App Store and click on the Purchased tab, look for the Xcode app in the list, it should say how much time is remaining.

The Xcode download is about 2+ GB in size. Once you begin the download from the App Store, beyond what Bob said, you can look at the Launchpad to see the download progress. If the circular icon is spinning, then it isn't downloading at all.

Thank you for these comments. I continued the effort after upgrading to 10.13.4 and the problem after that was that the download of xcode was very slow.

Then when the xcode download was finished and installed, I could not find that it was in the applications folder. I then used Spotlight Search and entered "xcode." Then I got this message:

"Xcode Server Builder cannot connect to your server because of a configuration issue. Please use Choose Xcode in Server to reconfigure Xcode Server."

This is a desktop and if I have a server, I don't know about it. Should I look for an app called "Xcode Server Builder?"

When you search in Spotlight, both Xcode and Xcode Server Builder are visible and you chose the latter as opposed to the former. So ignore that message and open up Finder, click on Applications on in the left sidebar and you should find Xcode toward the bottom of the list. Apps from the App Store are always installed in the /Applications folder.

Thank you for this information. Apparently the download and installation, even though it took an enormous amount of time, did not place xcode in the application folder. Should I try downloading it again? The ap store says there are not more updates available.

You can look in Launchpad, see if you see Xcode listed there.

That is very bizzare, but do as Bob and I have suggested and check Launchpad and see what you see.

Maybe time to get and put Find Any File.app (FAF) to work and see what you've got as far as "xcode" stuff:

High Sierra is warning that it needs to be updated. It might not work at all in 10.14.X. However, the "EasyFind.app" will continue to work as it's 64 bit.

I have started a complete rewrite of FAF that will not only address the 64 bit requirement but also make other features more easy to add in the future, such as: Optional single-window interface, immediate listing of results, scripting.

If you like to start trying the new version 2 as soon as it's available, check the options Automatically check for updates and Include Beta & Preview versions in FAF's Preferences window.

Sounds like the FAF developer is working on a newer version. I wonder why he's optimistic that the current version of FAF will continue to work OK with 10.14.X? Apple is acting very cagey with their warning about 32 bit apps in that they say there will be compromises. What the heck does that mean?

And why when I run Office 2011 apps which are 32 bit, I get no warning at all? Perhaps a little payola from Microsoft? LOL.
