I'm kind of wondering why you need the top of the line 2017 iMac 27" model to do what you stated above? It's your money of course, but I would think you could go with a not so loaded model?

One more qn. I understand a lot of ppl bash d fusion drive but I can't understand why! Being a former Windows user n about to buy my iMac in awhile, I hv been using normal hdd n dun find it slow. Mayb I'm used to it after 30 odd years! The fusion hdd seems fantastic to me in comparison to my 30 odd years of normal hdd. Am I missing something here? I understand d ssd speed thingy but if tats all to it, then I wud b comfy with fusion. Again, unless I'm missing something! Cheers!!!

There is nothing "wrong" with fusion drives. But by fusing two drives like that, if either one fails, you lose everything stored on both of them. Given that SSD and HD prices are coming down, it just seems to make better sense to get a true SSD drive for the internal use and a big external HD to store the data. Interfaces are now tremendously fast (Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB-c), so the data transfer speeds for externals is really good, too.

To me, this issue only matters if you need a lot of storage space. I have a 500GB SSD in my Mac mini, and I'm only using about 200GB of it. If you need a lot of data storage, then the Fusion drive is a great option. If the Mac is going to be used for work (creative/audio/video), a lot os read/write to the drive, then that would justify an SSD, in my opinion.

And, don't forget a backup strategy.

I didn't really need the top of the line 27" iMac either but I love mine. I did go with the SSD and stuck with the 8GB storage. Guys here convinced me to go with the SSD and I am glad I did. You forget the pain of the purchase price after a while....

Adding memory to your new iMac is easy. That's the first thing I did when I got mine. It's hard to forget the purchase price whenever that credit card bill arrives in the mail. LOL :)

@nancysped I have two suggestions for you when it comes to memory for your Mac:

1. When the Mac slows down and you think you may need more memory open Activity Monitor and click the memory tab. If the readings for memory pressure is consistently showing yellow more memory.
2. When it's time for additional memory, you can usually beat Apple's price. My go to places for that are OWC MacSales or Crucial.

For the uses you specified, you'd get way more bang for the buck buying a used 2015 model. I got mine almost a year ago, totally loaded 2015 (1TB flash) that the previous owner put 64GB in for just over $3000. For one with 16-32GB and a 512GB flash you could wind up spending like $2400 tops. Heck, someone in my area is selling one on Craigslist for $1800.

Have to agree with you there. I bought a 2015 model new shortly after they were released My unit has a fusion drive and originally came with 8 GB of ram. 8 GB was fine but I added another 8 GB a few months after the initial purchase mainly because I got a great deal on the chips.

Once again .. Thank you to everyone for their kind and helpful advice. And sorry for the late reply. I am now the proud owner of the above and probably the newest member of an Imac! Yeah!

First hands on opinion, after 30 years of windows! ....

Sleek, beautiful, sexy .. need I say more? LOL ..
the start up beats windows hands down .. and the fusion drive is awesome! everything is fast! But some things, unfortunately are better on the windows system .. damnnnn .. oh well, i'll just have to get used to the Apple way of computing

Overall, ... no regrets .. beautiful system

Once again, Thank you everyone for your kind help and advice to an ex windows user!
