Hi,

So I have a late 2014 iMac and a late 2009 iMac. I know my late 2014 5k retina can't be used as a 2nd display in target display mode, or at least thats what I've read. But I want to use the late 2014 as my main computer and have my late 2009 iMac as a 2nd display since it does support target display mode. Is this possible or will the late 2014 iMac prevent the late 2009 iMac from being used as the 2nd display?

Thanks
Rodney

You may be able to use the 2009 iMac as a second display but not as Target Mode since the retina 5K iMac does not support it. ScreenRecycler should work though.

Apple says the late 2014 "cant be used as Target Mode DISPLAYS". So does this mean that if the 2nd Imac that can be use as a Target mode display still wont work because my Main Imac (late 2014) cant be used as a 2nd display, even though it wont be used as the 2nd display? Its confusing. It seems like that it should work if I dont intend to use the 5k as the 2nd display. I cant found any info to support this. Are others that have tried to do this?

Ok, Ive read the article and It only states the late 2014 5k cant used as a 2nd in Target disk mode. But again Im not trying to use my 5k as a 2nd display. The 5k is my primary computer. Im trying to use my late 2009 imac as the 2nd display. The article states that my late 2009 CAN be use a 2nd display in Target Disk Mode. Furthermore the article implies that the user will have to press command F2 on the Imac they intend to use as a the 2nd (late 2009 imac) . I guess the only way I'll know for sure is to buy a mini displayport cable with male to male connectors on both ends and test it out. I'll let you guys know if it works.

Im trying to use my late 2009 imac as the 2nd display.

It should work if that's what you intend it for. It will not work the other way, however. Give it a try and let us know. There's also the program I linked to above that may work if TDM fails.

Should work no problem Rodney.:) The video out (Thunderbolt port) on the 2014 iMac is there to be used with external monitors. Since the Late 2009 iMac is capable of being used as an external monitor...it should work fine.

With one clarification. As far as I can tell...the exact Late 2009 iMac model was not mentioned in the thread so far. The Late 2009 iMac MUST be a 27" model...NOT a Late 2009 21" iMac.

Hey Fellas,

Im just giving you an update as promised. I got the Late 2009 iMac working flawlessly as the 2nd display. Im loving the extra screen real estate. i used a mini display cable male to male on both ends and connected it to the thunderbolt port of the 2014 and the other end to the mini display port of the 2009. It detected the 2nd display without a problem. WOW!! What a great use for my 2009 iMac since it was literally sitting in a corner collecting dust. I couldn't bring myself to sell it. it was my first Mac and we've been through a lot of recording sessions together. So its kinda sentimental. I hope I can get a few more years as a display before it dies. Thanks for all your help

Good to hear and now a question for the admins if I may…

Admins:
Is there some way such forum threads could have something like "Resolved" or "Fixed" added in the title so that some late comers could just see the current state at a glance???

I seem to remember years ago when we were using an older skin and version of vBulletin, there was an added response to the title of the thread which would say "Resolved". I don't see that as an option any longer except that it can be added manually. However, it would be something the staff would have to do as we are required to read thru every thread. Now that forum traffic is slow, it wouldn't be hard to do but I remember times when there were 4 or 5 pages of traffic waiting to be read every day. Quite a change from then!

Ahhh yes, the good old days when there were various helpful options available it seems. It now seems a bit more familiar when thinking of some recent OS changes and their dropping of some features.
