Will this 2012 Launched Apple Mac Mini function the LG 34UC98-W 34" Curved Ultrawide IPS Monitor (3440x1440)?

Purchased the Apple Mac Mini (Quad-Core i7 2.3GHz Processor, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, 1TB, HD Graphics, Launched Oct 2012) a few years back and have been using a 32" HD television via a HDMI cable since for my PC activities.

Will the LG 34UC98-W 34" Curved Ultrawide IPS Monitor (3440x1440, 2x HDMI, DP, 2x TB2, Height Adjust, Speakers) work fine for it as a monitor? Or will I not get the resolution offered? Can this mac mini from 2012 power this resolution?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

The full details of that Mac Mini indicates that it can drive a 1920x1200 display on the HDMI output and up to 2560x1600 as a second display. So, no it will not be able to drive the native resolution of that ultra wide monitor..

The latest MBP can go up to 4k on 4 external monitors or 5k on 2 external monitors, so it will work with that monitor..

Thanks a lot^

Would you then say there was little value in buying that screen then, given I won't be able to make the most of it's resolution quality?

Also, if I were to switch to a Mac Book pro in order to set up a multiple monitors, which one would be the most smartest to buy considering I don't care about the display? (As I'll be using external monitors)

So I want to buy a Mac Book Pro that will allow me to run this ultra wide monitor with it's resolution. Or can I buy an IMac and do that?

What's the goal here? To run that specific curved display only? Your need to upgrade might depend on what you do with your Mac and if the Mac Mini doesn't fit your needs..upgrading for the sake of just running a display seem silly IMO, but its your money..:)

Well I was looking for buying a more powerful mac any way, so this is probably convenient. As much as the Mac Mini is value for money, it is the weakest of the macs.

I work from home as a sports trader, so I need a mac that is powerful. I refuse to go to intel/windows because of all the constant interruptions and need for maintenance and virus software.

I am now turning my head to the Mac Pro which I have read will work on resolutions above 5k? It is incredibly expensive lol. Are there any places you can go to get them refurbished? Or is that just ludicrous?

Remember the "devil is in the details".:) The thread that was linked is mostly discussing a 2014 Mac-Mini (the Mac-Mini in this thread is a 2012 model). A 2014 Mac-Mini may have greater capabilities.

As discussed in that thread...sometimes greater resolutions than official specs say can be obtained...but then the video output on the display runs at a lower refresh rate (the hertz refresh rate). The refresh rate on many flat panel displays is 60Hz. I find that display refresh rates below 60Hz start to appear "blinky/winky/choppy" (you can see the display refresh with the naked eye). The link mentions a 50HZ refresh rate. A refresh rate of 50Hz would probably be noticable. You could get a lot of eye strain with that.

With such a nice display...you want to have the best experience possible.:) And a 2012 Mac-Mini may not be the best computer for it.

Depends on exactly what model Mac Pro you are thinking of. There's the older style Mac Pro that has the traditional large computer tower shape (last model discontinued 2013)...and then there's the new design Mac Pro that's much smaller & a cylinder shape (released 2013).

The older style Mac Pro many folks still use...and they can still be very powerful (would probably be fine for you)...and would have no issues running that 34" LG monitor.

As far as refurbished. The only Apple computer refurbished I trust is Apple. Apple has a very stringent refurbishing process...and all Apple refurbished computers come with a 12 month warranty...just like a brand new computer. If you buy it from somewhere else...you're simply getting a used computer (which may or may not have been throughly tested). Which is fine...just got to be aware of what you're getting.:)

Apple no longer sells refurbished older design Mac Pro's. Apple does sell refurbished new design Mac Pro's. Currently the refurbished new design Mac Pro models start at $2119:

Availability can change quickly. So what's offered in the link can change.

HTH,

I wouldn't spend the money on the Mac Pro, it is a few years old and will likely not see another update since the iMac Pro was announced and be released at some point. If you are heading down the desktop route, the 27" iMac is a nice offering with its 5K display and support for multiple external displays at high resolutions.

The iMac Pro is a beast capable of sporting the newer Intel chips over 8, 16 or more cores as opposed to the regular iMac which can go up to 4 cores..

Tell us what your budget is and if you are thinking more desktop or laptop and we can go from there..

I guess my real problem is I don't want the excess of having that a second, much smaller screen laying around. I just want a big-fat, one screen-setup. Do you know what I mean?

It is just absolutely ridiculously silly that they have no middle-ground for the non-screen users. Mac Mini is weak in graphics and the Mac Pro is far too expensive.

Would I just have the 27 inch screen on the edge of the desk, facing the wall? Are there examples of people doing this? I guess you could keep it on the floor, but again, it just feels and seems so bloody pointless in the screen even being there.

What specific 27 inch Imac would you recommend for this screen please Raz0rEdge?
