Hello,
I have recently upgraded my 2007 iMac to El Capitan. (10.11) iWork '08 will not migrate to the new OS.
iWork '09 will only work on Sierra which my machine cannot accept. I want a word processor.
Does anybody know a fix please?

First. Welcome to Mac-Forums.:)

Lots of choices:

- Apple Pages
- Microsoft Word
- Open Office
- Libre Office
- etc.

For some reason, Apple only supports Sierra and up with Pages now. I'm not sure why the OS requirements are so high for a word processor but in any case, ShipSinker, you'll need to explore one of the various alternatives including Office and LibreOffice.

I Thanked you for your Thoughts and entered a fairly long answer but after clicking on 'reply to thread' my text disappeared?
Open Office looks interesting but I'll also look at the others tomorrow. Not however, Pages. That is a the problem.
I hope this one reaches out to you. Regards Jim

Hi ShipSinker - my old iWork Suite use to migrate w/ OS X upgrades, but likely a few versions ago (on Sierra now and not in my Application folder). As already suggested, some excellent recommendations have been offered. My question is 'how powerful' a word processor do you need? Are Word or Pages an 'overkill' or do you need all of their features? If not, have you looked at TextEdit which comes w/ macOS and is a decent basic word processor; but for some other ideas, check this LINK - I've used TextWrangler and BBEdit briefly in the past. Good luck and let us know your choice(s) - Dave :)

I think there is some confusion here. The iWork suite 09 will work with El Capitan but not Sierra. Apple in their wisdom went from Pages 9 to Pages 5 when they did away with the iWork suite as a single purchase. Pages 5.X will work with El Capitan but not Sierra. Only Pages 6.X works with Sierra because of the new built in collaboration capability.

So, if you have a copy of Pages 9 (from the iWork 09 suite) it should still work OK with El Capitan. However, iWork 08 since it was a PPC/Intel suite of apps no longer works.

Have you tried Text Edit in your Applications folder?

I just wanted to confirm this, even with all its annoyances and saying there's a later version available — but they don't readily mention that you need a newer OS to use it!!

As for it not working with Sierra I can't confirm as I gave up on that OS. :\

Oh, that explains that!

Bob you might also like to check the online word processors offered by Google and One Drive. Both of these provide full function up to date word processors free.
See; https://www.google.com/drive/using-drive/
Or https://onedrive.live.com/?id=root&cid=9F4733EE3EEB7973
I've worked for both and if compatibility with other users is a concern, you may want to use Office Online.

Many Thanks for all of your good suggestions, there is a lot to contemplate over the next few days.
Ill let you know what I end up with. Time is my enemy today!
All I want is a word processor that will enable me to integrate whats taken some years to gather to date.
Hopefully, it will end as a book!
Why Oh Why does Apple want to make it hard for me???

I know it wasn't asked, but was mentioned, but just FWIW, a quick web search shows that Pages from iWork '09 does more or less still work with Sierra. But maybe not the best recommendation and I was sure at least some of it worked when I was checking out my Sierra install that I'm not using right now.

As some said:
Provided that you have the iWork '09 DVD applications updated to their last revisions, then most of the features still work on macOS Sierra. What's missing:

The Yosemite upgrade broke the Share menu : Send via Mail items in all iWork '09 applications. This is now a manual export, and then attachment process.
Hyphenation no longer works in Pages '09 v4.3.
If you did not update iPhoto to v9.6.1 by now, then the Toolbar media tool will not show your iPhoto library images. It is now impossible to update to iPhoto 9.6.1, as far as I know, and Photos may not migrate your iPhoto Library without a functional iPhoto v9.6.1 present. Drag and drop of images from Finder still works.
The Mail Merge panels in Pages '09 may not be complete, but since I do not use Pages '09 for Mail/Data Merge, I could be mistaken.
Inability to open newer Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents than those created by iWork '09 applications — unless source documents are first exported to their iWork '09 document equivalents.

There may be other issues that I have not encountered. There is no exhaustive list of features that no longer work in the iWork '09 product suite when installed on macOS Sierra.

ShipSinker,
Depending on the type of book; play, novel, reference etc., you may want to search for such applications designed for and recommended for such specific tasks and make your project so much easier and enjoyable.

Take a look at Scrivener. It's a word processor designed for authors of books, plays, etc. Organizes notes, then chapters, sections, footnotes, etc.

If you do decide on Scrivener, shop around by doing an internet search. It's on sale now and then from various sites. it's also been offered as part of an app bundle, so look around for the best deal.

Hello Everyone who responded to my original message which was very much appreciated.
I did download Apache Open Office to have a look at it but have decided and indeed acted upon a suggestion from the Apple Support Forum
which I have copied & pasted here. I put it here in case anyone might want to use the advise. I have done the first part, Pages now works fine for
me and I am a happy person. I have yet to decide on the second ('09 DVD) part as I wouldn't want all the extra disruption while trying to download Sierra!
Thank You all again, my Best Regards, Jim

"from the original iWork '08 DVD, and then follow up with these iWork '08 updaters to get you to the last '08 versions:
Pages '08 v3.0.3 - Numbers '08 v1.0.3 - Keynote '08 v4.0.4

You can still get the iWork '09 DVD from Amazon and Ebay resellers. Once these DVD applications are installed, they too will be dependent on their application libraries installed in System locations. There is a single, downloadable updater for these iWork '09 applications that is required for compatibility with OS X El Capitan. The Apple iWork 9.3 updater will bring these iWork '09 applications to their latest 12/2012 released versions.

Nothing in the Mac App Store will get you updates to iWork '08, or iWork '09 applications on El Capitan. The most current versions in the App Store of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote require macOS Sierra as a prerequisite for installation."
