I am hoping to upgrade the RAM on my 21.5" mid 2010 iMac which is currently running on 4gb's but has a capacity to take up to 16Gb's. I was told that Crucial are the best people to purchase from and have been onto their website to have a look. I can buy either 4 or 8Gb's in packs of 2. My iMac has 4 slots to take the memory and my question is, should I purchase a double pack of 8Gb's which will mean that 2 slots on my iMac will be left empty or do I need to fill all 4 slots using 4Gb memory things/cards? Simply put, will my machines performance/health be affected by leaving 2 slots empty? Any advice greatly welcomed. Thanks

Your machine can not accept 8 GB modules so you would have to purchase the 4 GB modules. 4 GB x 4 = 16 GB maximum memory.

According to Mactracker:

Maximum Memory 16 GB
Memory Slots 4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

We recommend either Crucial or OWC (Mac Sales) memory.

Just double check your iMac model in About this Mac before jumping in as there were some overlapping in sales.

The iMac 10.1 and 11.1 were sold up until July 2010 and take PC8500 modules, and models11.2 and 11.3 takePC3-10600 modules.
