I happened on an iMac G5 model a1200 in the recycling center. I brought it home and turned it on. The light on the case in the lower right hand corner lights up but no screen image. There is a medium loudness whirling sound coming from the computer. No white screen, no prohibitive folder, no apple logo. It just turns on and blank screen. Also there is no chime sound. The screen does flicker a split second when it turns on. I'm about to open the computer and replace the hard drive thinking the hard drive is shot. Any other thoughts. Could a busted cooling fan be the cause. Could the thermal sensor be shot and won't allow the computer to get to the startup screen? Since this was a salvage, I'd like to keep cost low.

G'day and welcome to the fprums.

You know why it was thrown out. Just put it back in the yellow bin. G5's are long, long gone and not worth ven $5 to try and fix. With a suspect hard drive, maybe a logic board with no chine, and then an operating system you are looking at $100 too much.
