I have a 2013 21" iMac running 10.10.5. My speaker just started popping. The popping is intermittent and occurs only in the finder. If an app is running it is fine. When it is popping, I can only open a program from the dock. the drive icon will not open and the drop down menus flash. It will also not go to sleep. I restarted, fixed permissions and ran tech tool. All seemed fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

WWhen you ran Repair Disk what message did you get? If you have the optional three year AppleCare make an appointment at a Genius Bar or Apple Store.

I get the message that the volumes appear ok, followed by;

file system check exit code is 0.

Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

I unfortunately do not have the optional applecare.

Again, thank you for your help.

After spending a lot of time listening, I've decided that the sound is not the speaker,but rather a sound like a stuck key. Any further ideas. Might it be a failing power supply?

I think that you need to be a bit more specific:

- As to what the sound is like (what sort of stuck key…what do you mean by a "stuck key")?
- Where the sound is coming from (what area of the computer)?
- When & how often it happens?
- How loud it is?

Also…I would say that odds are with a 2013 computer that it shouldn't be the power supply (but you never know I guess).

Try shutting down and the boot up using Safe Boot Mode, login and see if there's any change or improvement.

If things improve, you've got some goofy third party software conflicting with something and causing the problem.

OK, here is the latest. It is the speaker. It is a rapid clicking. I can mute the sound, but I can tell that the problem is still active as I cannot open the HD icon and the pull down menus flash. It is an intermittent problem. When everything is good, I can put the iMac to sleep, but much later it will wake. I've opened in safe mode and recovery mode, but the problem remains. This is making me crazy - any ideas?

The crazy man thanks you for your help.
