I used to use my old iMac as airport base for other apple products. Now with new mac I can't figure it out. Apple is no support - they recommend you buy separate router. Anyone know how to do this?

We're going to need some additional information to sort this out. Sharing an internet connection between Macs and other devices, I've done it as recently as about a month ago. Here's so,e of the information we need to know:

1. What are the settings in the Sharing preference panes on both Macs
2. What are the network settings on both Macs
3. More info about both Macs (model, OS)
4. What kind of password protection is used on the connection (none, sep, spa, wpa2)

I am assuming that the Mac being used as the base station is connected to your router via ethernet? Try the following adjustments and see if it works:

On the Mac that will be used as the base station look at the section To computers using: ethernet, airport(was on before switch), firewire change this so that Airport is the only thing selected.

If the newer Mac will be receiving the signal and not sending it to other devices I don't think any of the To Computers Using Options need to be checked.

The bigger problem seems to be that the Airport (wireless) is on (ready to receive) but not connected to your network. I think you are going to have to go into both machines and change the encryption from WEP to either WPA or WPA2). Newer devices often have trouble with WEP encryption
