Anyone help with replacing an old G4 667 Hard Drive..?

I've got an old G4 667mhz machine with a 60gb hard drive that I want to replace; the machine runs OS9, and was bought pretty much stock standard. Could anyone recommend as to whether this is even possible, and if it is, can I just buy a standard PC drive to replace it with? Is there a preferred brand or type of disk? I've looked around but am not sure about which model or spec to go for or if it's even do-able. Also, will I be able to reinstall OS9 on a new drive?

Any advice much appreciated!!!!

yeah you can buy a standard pc drive but you have to make sure it works (as far as compatibility) with your machine. I'm tryin to upgrade mine as well but mine is an older one. on the HD box it will assure you and say "for pc and macintosh computers" or something like that. just make sure you get the one for your comp. (you can look on the mac site for your comp's specs)

if you have the install disk for os9 you can but I believe that os9 is free at the apple stores now (from a friend that works there) but you can call and ask them to be certain.

So long as it is a 3.5" IDE mechanism and not SATA you will be fine.

Also you should have the OS 9 CDs that came with your Power Mac, just pop it in the CD drive and hold down C on boot to boot from the CD and install to your new hard disk.

Not aware of OS 9 being free.

But you can get it from http://www.applerescue.us - pretty good price.

Bear in mind you can upgrade 9.0.4 for free to 9.2 via the patches on Apple's website.

Thanks Vicky!

In that case, I think I'm going to grab a good ol' IDE 7200rpm off ebuyer and see what happens when I stuff it in the old Mac!

Right, don't go over 120GB with the older G4 towers. Only the MDD would support the larger drives Stock. You can get a PCI HDD controler card if you want a larger than 120GB drive though, but with the stock controler say 120GB or less.

As far as drives, Any 3.5" PC drive. I have had very good luck with the new Seagates. Very good drives. And be sure it's IDE and not SATA!!
