G3 built-in ethernet

If the ethernet does not show up on the system profiler, does that mean it is defective?

Yes, I would imagine there is some sort of issue if it does not appear in the Profiler. This is probably obvious, but be sure to check under the "Network" category.

what kind of G3? i recall having it not show in osx.2 on my beige..but it sitll worked via DHCP

Not necessarily. There could be a multitude of reasons why it won't show up. Does it actually work? More information would be needed to determine if the port was actually defective or not.

It's a beige and set for DHCP. I'm trying to network it to a G4. Am using crossover (even tried straight) but won't let me switch to ethernet in apple talk control panel.
