I gave my Dad my old beige G3 with a top of the line 17" Viewsonic monitor from 1998.
The modem is not working (I think) and I would like to get him either the Mac Mini or eMac.
Will there be a problem between the Mac Mini and the old Viewsonic monitor?
Should I just spend the $300 more on the emac? The Viewsonic was $700 and still want to use it.
I don't want to spend much on the G3 to fix it since the CD drive sometimes acts funny too.

The eMac will give you an extra USB slot and Audio in which the mini hasn't got.
The CD/DVD tray loader rather than slot loader is often easier to use too.
Built in speakers & Mic, no wires all over the place makes the eMac a neat option. Yes I have an eMac but went through the same mini versus eMac for an older friend, the eMac won hands down. :)

Personally, I think the eMac is the best value in the line right now. This is offset somewhat because you have a screen that you will be able to use. However you'll still have to get a USB keyboard & mouse for the mini (included with the eMac). Both models have limited expansion possibilities but the eMac has an additional RAM slot as well as the extra USB port, speakers and mic mentioned above. Since there is no substantial difference between them it really comes down to personal preference.

I have extra keyboards, mice lying around at work. What I didn't like about the mini was the location of the power button and connections...maybe it's just too small.

I would choose a eMac also. Along with the reasons already listed i would add: it has a faster hard drive, a better graphics card with more video RAM, twice the number of Firewire ports, & one more USB port. If someone placed a eMac & a Mac Mini in front of me, i would feel alot more confident opening the eMac to replace any internal componates. Also the eMac has been around a lot longer, giving Apple a chance to improve & perfect it. :)
