Since my "superdrive" has quit burning DVDs (still burns CDs and reads DVDs) I'm wondering which drive would be best to replace it with. Mini specs below avatar to the left.

Have you considered an external optical drive? It has its advantages.

I note your existing external devices, perhaps using the one firewire port. USB then might be your most convenient option, unless you don't mind disconnecting the firewire cable repeatedly.

A USB external optical drive can be used to boot your Mini for hardware maintenance.

+1 for the suggestion by hughvane. An external optical drive has its advantages. My optical drive works fine but I still keep an external drive handy for those odd jobs that come up. You can buy a decent external drive for less than $75.

Regards.

Yes, I have considered external drives, and yes, I've also found the site mentioned by pigoo. There's enough things cluttering up my desk already, and I was kinda looking for answers like "newer models of the mini use a ABCD-123 drive from manufacturer XYZ and it works in your old one too, I've installed one and it works".
The one that's built in is the MATSHITA (Panasonic) UJ-846, and there are many people reporting the same problem with, so I kinda would like to have a different one than that.
