Hi, I'm a mac n00b ... and i just got a iMac 333 (rev A as far as I can tell) and it has a pop-out CD rom ... It's running 8.5 / 9.2 and I got a OS X cd but it reads it 1/10 times ... It seems the drive is kaput .... i have a few laptop dvd drives, and they appear to be the same interface ...

it may be a noob question, but what is swappable?

(The 333 is a rev D model.) The older imacs used the same CD as the powerbooks that were available at the same time. The G3 Powerbook that was around at the time used an expansion module CD. In theory it could be adapted by removing from the module and mounting it in the CD bay on the iMac. On the other hand you can get a 24x CD-RW slot-loading replacement drive from MCE for about $175 (www.mcetech.com). There is a good site for instructions to open these models at: http://www.djonmac.com/index.html. Follow the steps for the HD replacement to get to the CD drive.
