flashing question mark

Alright I restarted my iMac today and I got a file with a flashing question mark, so I know I need to insert the install disk, and hold c, so I have two discs, mac osx install disc 1 and 2

which one do I use? I tired 1 and it looks like it wants start up fresh it makes me pick a language etc, will that erase all my hard drive memory? And all the stuff on it???

Please help

I have no idea how to back up lol

but I was on the phone with apple and we tried every restart and reset available, they didn't work. So now i have to reinstall tiger. She said that It shouldn't delete any data so I'm hoping it doesn't
