Would help if we knew exactly which model imac, what OS, and how you're connecting to the net.

Ok, click on the apple in the menu, go to Control panels and click on tcp/ip.
Connect via should be ethernet.
Configure should be Using DHCP server.

Are you using a router or connecting directly to the cable modem?

This computer should be able to run Panther 10.3. Depends on drive size and amount of memory.

Did you try restarting the OS after you made the changes to the settings? Been a while since I messed with OS9.

No I did not as I do not have the original disks and was going to put os x on it to benefit for the programs for the iphone.

Hah, me too, I had to look it up :)

Try a restart, you don't need system disks for that.
Also, you didn't answer my question - router or no?
If yes, try connecting directly to the cable modem. Also try a different ethernet cable. They do go bad.
As far as installing OS X, MAKE SURE YOU DO A FIRMWARE UPDATE FIRST!!

Make shure Apple Talk is turned on and connect via ethernet. Before you update to OS10 you must upgrade to 9.2 and the boot rom is 4.1.9. The Unix code in OS10 can burn up the video chip if the firmwear is not right. The firmwear update is a seperate download, burn it to a CD and follow the instructions.
