my imac g5 (ALS) goes to the blue screen on start up. I have reinstalled 10.5 on it. I have now (using the imac in target disk mode, it won't start up from CD- goes to blue screen) wiped the drive (and zeroed it) and reinstalled 10.5 -
still goes to blue screen.

I can start up in safe mode and it works fine!( apart from the limitations of safe mode)

I've run the fskd disk routine, cleared the usually pram etc.

I'm assuming a logic board or video card/chip issue. (something that is on the logic board that doesn't load in safe mode- airport card that's built onto the logic board?)

can anybody think of something I'm missing?

Run Apple Hardware Test over the machine as this will check out logic board, graphic card and memory.

Also as you were able to boot from the install disc, did you run Repair Disk from Utilities>Disk Utility before the install?

had your exact problem

i had your exact problem with a 24" intell mac bought in 08. after a month of fighting with apple and their warranty service they are scrapping the computer and replacing it.

it was overheating and causing all the components to fail. it would start in safe mode. but in a regular boot it would kinda work and then hang for a while sometimes it would recover and sometimes not. most of the time it would just hang out at the grey screen and never start up... but always started in safe boot.

I did run the disk utility and repaired any permissions.
since it's an G5- it's not worth paying for a new board and it's certainly out of warranty

so then the real question is what to do with it?
