I have just seen this screen on my iMac M1 running Monterey 12.2.1 Do I need to panic or is it just a scam?

I have no idea just when it first appeared as it seems to have come up as a separate window and was hidden behind other windows. Screenshot 2022-04-03 at 10.45.06.png

Any ideas, as quickly if possible please?

Thank you for your super quick reply Steve.

Can I assume that it's just a case of close it and forget about it ?

Scam. Just make sure your macOS inbuilt defences are up to date and you’ll be fine.

Good to be suspicious. It's so disheartening that there are any scammers out there at all, but I know there are millions of them. So sad.

Hey John, three viruses! Are you starting up a collection of them?:):);)

Obviously a scam, of course, and just a little joke.

Hi John - sounds like 'scareware' of course hoping that you would click 'Scan Now' and download some real nasties! My wife ran into this malware late last year - put up a thread that generated some interesting discussion HERE, if interested. I probably went a little 'overboard' but never hurts, I guess - but as all have said 'not to worry' - Dave :)

That is what is known as a "phishing" scam. It uses social engineering to get you to do something that you really shouldn't do, like give out your personal financial information. The most important thing to do when you encounter such a scam is to not do anything that the scam implores you to do. Don't click on any buttons, don't follow any links, don't call any phone numbers, etc. Just close the window in your browser and go on with your life.

However, in some instances this is more than just a phishing scam. If this window keeps on popping up in your Web browser you may be infected with adware. Adware isn't malicious, it won't harm your Mac, but it will be annoyingly persistent in that it will keep on displaying this scary sounding alert.

If you keep on seeing that pop-up window, download this free anti-adware software and run it:

DetectX Swift (free)

DetectX Swift should be able to easily find the adware and offer to eliminate it for you.

Is this a popup in the browser? I ignore every single one of those.

Not a popup as I recognised it, but a complete window in Safari that I hadn't seen as it was behind the other open programs like Mail, Wattsapp and Safari

It couldn't hurt to download DetectX and do a scan. After all, it's free.

While the Mac OS has a lot of built-in anti-malware software, it does very little to protect you from most adware.

I've just had a look to see about getting DirectX. Some links say it's only for windoze and won't run natively on Macs. Plus I haven't found a site that has anything but the windoze version?

Any chance of a link please?

DetectX Swift works on Macs and has done so for very many years,

You can download this from the Developer's site:

I don't know what you are looking at. Certainly not the link that I gave earlier in this thread. To the best of my knowledge there IS NO version of DetectX for Windows. Certainly there is no Windows version in evidence on their Web site:

If you need a direct download link, it is:

I do believe that my dislequeser was getting the better of me and that I had probably looked at directx instead.

A bit like British Rail, I got there in the end

Thank you for the help, yet again!
