If # isn't shift-3, go into the System Preferences and click on International. Click on Input Menu, then Keyboard Viewer. Make sure "Show input menu in menu bar," at the bottom, is ticked, as well. A flag will appear in the menu bar. Click the flag and choose Keyboard Viewer. When the Keyboard Viewer is visible, scan it for the # symbol to see where it is. If it doesn't show up, press the shift key. If it still doesn't show up, hold down the option key, then shift-option. The # is hiding there somewhere.
