Until you get your data back, my tip won't help you, but here it is for future use. You can do an archive of your iCal data (and your address book, and who knows what else), by simply clicking on File>Export> iCal archive. I have created a folder in my documents named just that, and my archives go into that. Then any time you seem to have a problem, you can simply open an archived file and you are good to go again. Saved my cookies several times. I try to do an archive before I do anything major to my data. Small price to pay for being able to recreate your data.
