Power Mac MMD dual 1.25 and an iMac 21.5" 3.06
I want to move files and possibly settings from my old Power Mac G4 MDD to my new iMac (21.5"). The firewire plugs are different. Power Mac has the old 400 firewire connection and the iMac has an 800. One has 9 pin connector and the other 6 pin. Can I connect the two macs with a cable with the two different pin connectors on each end and transfer files like have with using 2 400 connectors???

I have a Belkin Firewire 800 cable with a Firewire 400 connection on the other ind. I use it to connect to a couple of hard drives that still have the Firewire 400 connections. The cable works fine for that but should also work to transfer files to the new machine. Belkin 6ft. 9-Pin to 4-Pin FireWire 800/400 Cable F3N403-06-APL. I have seen the same type cable from other manufacturers so it may be cheaper with another brand.

As suggested you can use a Firewire that has both a 800 and 400 male plug on either end or you can do what I do and just get a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter if you already have a Firewire 400 cable (both male ends). The adapter is nice if you have other devices which has Firewire 400.

Modified, since the post I responded to no longer exists:

Left this just in case others wanted to see some real world tests I ran comparing USB, FW400 and FW800 - link.

To the internal drive - 10 min 29 sec
To external w/FW800 - 10 min 39 sec
Hi Bob,
Sorry to hijack this thread, but the one I've quoted is dead.
The software you mention in the above post is no longer available for download - What alternatives would you recommend?

Thanks.

Less than a year ago now, a new court ruling came out that basically struck down the capabilities of even these type programs that maintained the end users inability to make copies as the software still had to crack the encryption first in order to move the content to your hard drive.

At this point in time, because it's illegal to break the encryption here in the U.S., it's discussion is not allowed in the forum.
We all need to be helping out in whatever way we can for the fair use of the material we have purchased.
