Dear Studio7Records I promise you no insult or offence is intended, but it is not a question of not being able to afford some kind of EHD - it is that you cannot afford NOT to. As others above have said, in so many words, you are currently taking a big risk with those precious and vital files, photos, videos etc. What a devastation it would be to lose these - now - never mind as a consequence of an upgrade. EHDs are cheap relative to computers and relative to high-end apps such as logic pro and the like. Beg, borrow, but get one NOW. Whether you opt for the "easiest" set up-and leave Time Machine option which runs in the background or follow the Clone approach (as detailed above) is up to you. If you need a talk-me-through how to set up TM or one of the Clones - ask and we'll help you. But please backup now before you do anything else. In fact, in my opinion, if money is really tight, I'd defer the upgrade to Mountain Lion and put the money towards the EHD. Lion is a very powerful OS and will serve your needs. From what I've read (I'm no expert), Mountain Lion may not offer that much more for the work you are currently doing. Ian
