Hi,
My wife has an older iMac (1GHz PowerPC, 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 80 GB hard drive). It's running 10.3.9 now. She needs 10.4 to run some new applications. So my main question is can I install 10.4 on this computer at all? Second, if I buy an install disc that has basic 10.4, will I be able to upgrade it to the highest version for a Power PC online for free? Through Apple?
Third I've looked around a bit and the asking price for this old OS is outrageous. What's the least expensive way to up grade the OS?
Thanks much for any advice.

Yes your computer can be upgraded to OS 10.4 Tiger...in fact it could be updated to 10.5 Leopard if you wanted to...but in either case (10.4 or 10.5)...I would recommend upgrading the ram to at least 1 gigabyte...256meg is very very low.

If you purchase OS 10.4...you will be able to update it to OS 10.4.11.

If you purchase OS 10.5...you will be able to update to 10.5.8.

As far as purchasing either 10.4 or 10.5...yes they are expensive. Usually at least $100+ for either on eBay.

Hope this helps,

Go ahead and call apple and tell them you lost your Tiger disks, they will be ether CDs or a DVD depending on your disk drive, they will ask for the serial# of your iMac . I got mine back in June for sixteen bucks for my ClamShell iBook.

Honesty is definitely the best policy! :)

You certainly can sleep better at night...and when it's time to enter the "Pearly Gates"...nobody's going to ask you any tough questions about how you obtained those "Tiger" disks...before they let you in!!!;)

Rick,

I definitely do remember! I haven't called yet...been busy. I definitely have at least a couple of Mac's that qualify.

What is the number I need to call...and how long did it take to get the disks?

Thanks,

I fear not judgement from any God, for I alone can know my intentions, and I judge myself worthy. Plus, being honest is usually just the better route anyway. Gets you into less trouble.

OK! OK! Guys I get it O:) I really I'm honest! When I called I told them I was given the Ibook by a co-worker, which I was and that she lost the disks.

Nick the phone number I used was the one off the WEB site....1-800-applecare!? I think thats it. It only took five days to get to me but but I live SoCal. If you look at the old posts that you made you'll see that I found the invoice and I gave all the info on it, even the part#

I found my old post!!

OK, Ladies and Gentlemen! Your lucky day! It just so happens that I kept the invoice that came with the disk. I ordered on 5/14/09 and list.

1 ea Product#2Z691-5395 DSK ASSY,DVD, MAC OS X 10.4 RT $16.00

Tax 1.48

Total $17.48

The disk shipped out of Apple Service Operations, 3011 Laguna Blvd, Bldg A, Elk Grove, Ca. 95758.

I used this on both my Graphite Clamshell and 14" iBook.
The DVD is White, not Black or Gray. Says replacement DVD not for resale.
