That's exactly how it works. Folks everywhere have been using external drive for years & years & years. You need an external HD with the proper OS installed on it. But to do the OS install...you need an operating computer. So unless you have access to a 2nd working Mac...an external HD with an OS on it won't work...since you won't have any way to install the OS on it. So the other approach is an external USB optical drive (CD/DVD drive)...and an OS install DVD. Since you have a MacBook Air 2,1...you can use a OS 10.6 install DVD (£14.00): Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (UK) This isn't brain surgery!;) If the computer won't boot from the internal SSD...and it will from an external device (as suggested in earlier posts)...then there is a problem with the internal SSD: - the internal SSD is dead - the internal SSD is dying - the OS install on the internal SSD is bad - the internal SSD is damaged. But you cannot determine any of this...unless you can successfully boot the computer from an ALTERNATIVE device (something external). I am recommending that you get an external USB optical drive...and order the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple (you need the actual disk...not a download). - Nick
