How do I turn off the iMac display when connected to external tv via DisplayPort?

As the display on the iMac is the primary display, you can't. Putting the display to sleep is equivalent of putting the iMac to sleep. The MBP can be used in a manner in which you don't use the the built-in display but only externals.
