transferring selected files from iMac to mac book pro using time machine

I have a new mac book pro and an iMac. I want to transfer selected files from the iMac to the mac book pro. I understand I can use time machine to do this but i do not want to back up the mac book pro on the dedicate drive i use for the iMac. I can connect the mac book to the drive but there seems to be no way, i can find, to do this selected transfer without making the drive my time machine backup drive.

Any suggestions?

To populate a new machine, use Migration Assistant. You can choose what your transfer. Full instructions here. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204350

Afterwards get a new drive for the MBP back up and retain the old one for your iMac.
