Thermal cutout switch on iMac

Is there a thermal cutout switch on the iMac? Today while on Safari, I got a msg that I had lost my internet connection. Tried Chrome and Firefox same... even tho I still have my internet connection...as verified on an HP Laptop.. This has happened once or twice before. When I tried to restart, the computer would not turn on. Felt quite warm to the touch on top...I probably left it on much longer then normal. I let it cool down and it is working fine now. The only thing I can think of is there is some kind of thermal shutdown if the computer gets too hot. Comments?
Also, how can I check the fan to see if that is working?
