Smart Mailboxes not working after upgrade to Monterey

2019 27" iMac, 3 GHz i5, 40gb RAM, 1TB Fusion int, 46TB ext drives, Catalina 10.15.7
Just updated to Monterey from Catalina and now the Smart Mailboxes I had setup under Catalina mail no longer work in Monterey mail. I have deleted and recreated a couple of them and they do not "search and display" any emails that match the specified criteria. Is there a mail preference option or something else that prevents smart mailboxes from working. I've also tried using the search option to specify the same criteria but it does not work as defined in the Mail Help display. a couple of the Smart Mailboxes I use frequently are a today and yesterday search for emails received today and yesterday. When I select the smart maibox nothing shows in the list. Anyone have any suggestions for what to change in my setup?
