My iPhone 6S battery performance has been acting quite oddly. Recently I updated from iOS 13 to iOS 14.4 and it got significantly worse.

For quite a while the phone has lost power overnight at what seems too fast considering that the Battery display shows nothing running.

Now, since updating (directly) from 13 to 14.4 I see that, plus a sudden drop to 1% - typically in the early morning hours - 5AM-ish.

I think I saw that happen once or twice in the past on this phone, and saw it at least once on an iPad Air, but it was rare.

Would this fit with needing to replace the battery? It is an odd symptom (not to mention a problem).

Your phone is definitely running on a battery that has probably gotten weaker. Considering the age of the phone, it's likely ready for a new battery.

Also, there have been reports on another forum that updating to 14.4 for older phones not only is hard on the battery but also on storage. Newer versions of iOS are designed for newer phones and take up more space.

Apple charges $49.00 to change out the battery. Might be a bit difficult finding an Apple store that's open and is accepting appointments. You can have the battery changed out at an Apple Authorized Service Provider for the same price. And it will be a genuine Apple battery.
