Could I theoretically replace my iMac drive with one from my old macbook pro? I'm going to try booting using target disk mode and connect the two via firewire, but figured I'd check here first.
We need to know a bit more about what you are trying to do and some specifics about what is happening. Putting the MacBook Pro drive inside the iMac is different from either putting one of the Macs into Target Disk Mode or simply putting the drive into an external enclosure to test things.

Just from a basic form-factor standpoint. If your MacBook Pro has the older style "spinner" HD. The spinner HD in your MacBook Pro is 2.5"...the spinner HD in your iMac is 3.5" (bigger). To properly install a smaller physical size MacBook Pro HD into an iMac...you would need some sort of adapter.
If you have a newer MacBook Pro with flash storage...that could be a bigger & more expensive project.
But as other folks have mentioned...need to know the exact model MacBook Pro and iMac we are dealing with.
