[QUOTE="BluesForDan, post: 895115, member: 51722"] computer started freezing up on me today, restarted / rebooted several times. it would run, then lock up. Now the lights go on, but the screen stays blank. the next to last time i restarted, it made this rhythmic whirring noise, so i shut it down again. tried calling macedge but figures, it was 10 minutes after closing time. if i hadn't spent so much time fudging around, i could have the claim ticket already started. holy crap, i've never had this happen before. is this typical hard drive failure? I've got my sister's mac book going through my cable modem, i've got connection at the moment. what is the prognosis of recovery from the non-functioning unit? it was working fine until the last update 2 weeks ago, i was running os x 10.4.11, on safari 4.0.3 (4531.9). i started getting download alerts that i was downloading 'Desktop-X-1', where 'X' increased by one each time this download window popped up. 9 was the last one about an hour before the computer started freezing up. At first, I thought it was a safari thing, then it froze up when i was using firefox. i got in safari one last time and it froze up trying to open the google (home) page. Then blank screen with whirring breath-like sound, finally lights on at power switch and screen corner, screen blank, no sound at all. i'm trying to stqart it one more time, and ***, now it lights up and it just did. i tried to write a quick journal entry, saved it (I think, heard the little 'ching' noise). then it froze up again.
