I've just gone and bought myself a new (well, new to me) Fujifilm GFX100 camera. It takes 102MP images and the raw files are commensurately large.

I currently do all my photo editing on a 2017 iMac - with a 4-core Intel i5 CPU and 32GB of RAM. It handles the files from my current camera (a 50MP Fujifilm job) just fine. As well as photos I also edit video for my YT channel using iMovie. All my raw images and videos are stored on an external drive.

I also own a 16" MBP with an 8-core CPU but only 16GB of RAM.

Going forward with the new camera I'm wondering whether I'd be better off sticking with my iMac with its 32GB of RAM, or using my MBP with its more powerful processor but less RAM, and an external monitor for the editing work.

thanks, Nick

I'm inclined to agree with ntotrr. Why not just try editing something off your new (to you) camera on the iMac and see what you think of the performance? I suspect it'd be fine.

thanks you both :)

ntotr - I'd heard that LR was more RAM intensive but thanks for the article and confirmation

Lifeisabeach (easily the best username on here) - I'll try on both. The new files are 250mb so whatever I use is going to take some processing I'd imagine!

Im a bit late to the party, but if you are using LR, if you generate smart previews for the images on import they'll take a while to generate but it really will help with the speed of things. There is also an option in the preference pane under settings for performance to use smart previews for editing. It won't affect your end result once you export it. I've used the GFX100 and it really is a monster.... I will admit it was not pleasant on my old Dual Core i5 8GB MBP from 2014...
