Sarcasm always adds a lot to any debate. My first experience with Linux was SuSE Linux 5.1, back in about 1997 or so - I had to hack the modem drivers to get onto AOL (yes, AOL...). It was fun and rewarding. 10 years later, and I was still hacking my Wifi card to get online... in the meantime you've got things like Beryl and Compiz, that have taken tens of thousands of coding hours to give us spinning Open Office cubes - because that's just what the Linux community needs. What version is it on now? 0.1.x? Now when XMBC first emerged, I have to say I was completely stoked - it was so promising (it STILL is) but of course, the perfect democracy that exists in the OS community had to have its cake, and eat it. Boxee, Plex, iConsole, MediaPortal etc etc, all took time and resources away from what could have been the best media experience on any platform (all platforms in fact). VLC is a great example of how OS can focus on delivering one thing really well, rather than everything done really badly. It's one of the few things out there with a 1.x release. BTW, my rant is more at my frustration with the community I used to dedicate thousands of hours a year to support becoming almost irrelevant to the mainstream (with the exception of Firefox). I do wish Boxee luck, they might just become a commercial success.
