Messages about disk ejection

I use a 17" MBP and "timeline" backup on to a 2 partition,
1TB remote hard drive. I backup 2 MBP's , but I keep getting the following message:
" Disk not properly ejected XXX 's MBP before
disconnecting or shutting off."

Does anyone know what this means?
How can I make the message not appear?

Advice will be appreciated!

Hello Jim. What this means is...external storage media must be "ejected properly" before they are disconnected. External media such as external HD's, SD cards, etc. To eject an external storage device properly is to drag it's icon to the trash can (or alternate method) first...then physically unplugging or removing the drive.

Eventually if NOT ejecting the drive properly is done enough...disk organization files or preference files will get damaged or corrupted...leading to sporatic connections...or no connection.

How can I make the message not appear?

"Eject" external disks properly before disconnecting them.

Hi Jim - some clarification might help; first, I assume by 'timeline' backup that you are using Time Machine - correct? If so what do you mean by 'remote hard drive'? Is this done 'on a network' or do you intermittently plug in the HD for a backup? Also, have you seen this message before or is this a new experience? My error-I do use Time Machine, and I backup to the HD that is connected
by USB. However, the backup is set for automatic, and since I only turn
off the MBP 1/wk, I don’t often see the eject msg. And, you’re right, the
msg has bees appearing for some time. What confuses me, though, is that I
didn’t get this msg when I had a 15” MBP, connected the same way. Is there
a setting I missed that will automatically eject the disks?

There is no setting that will automatically eject the disk. However, I suspect your external hard drive may be having problems and it's possible that it may fail without any notice to you. When an external hard drive begins acting this way, that is the first clue. You should also check the USB cable and connector as it's possible that it may be defective causing the drive to dismount.

Make sure you have another source of backup in case that drive is getting ready to fail.
