I'm trying to transfer a file from one desktop to another using a memory stick. Although the 1 Gb stick is empty I'm told there is only 148 b available. How can this be? I am trying to transfer a file which is twice that.

Did this memory stick have stuff on it that you perhaps dragged to the trash but didn't empty the trash? If so, the files are still "there" on the drive. If that is indeed the case, plug the stick back into the computer on which you did the trashing, empty the recycle bin and then confirm that the stick reports the correct amount of free space..

Thanks, Ashwin: that works! (Funny - I think I must have done this before, but memory goes at my age!)

Another problem: the file I am transferring is an Appleworks file, a compendium of photos. When transferred it converts to Pages. However, some of the photos are distorted or out of position, yet I cannot get at them to adjust them. (When I click on one, faint crosses appear at the corners.)

I can get round this by converting to PDF before transferring, but it would be nice to be able to have a Pages version.

A 1GB thumb drive is ohh so very small, particularly for accessing photos. They are very cheap and suggest you purchase a 16GB drive, format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and see if that works.
