This piece of ransomware encrypts data on the affected system essentially holding the data hostage until a payoff is made.Although it does not affect OS X users directly many users could have their data held hostage if it is stored on one of the infected servers. Although Microsoft had previously released a patch for this exploit (going all the way back to Windows XP server) some of the institutional targets had not yet updated their systems. This particular piece of malware spread through files attached in an e-mail.
