I was able to isolate a figure in an image using the free trial of Photoshop (can't afford to buy it). The image is part photo - part art. It is complicated and its background a similar color so it took a lot of time. The alteration has a gray background and looks great. The trial is over so I need to finish the project using iPhoto. But when I crop the picture, the gray disappears and the edge becomes distorted. Have any experience with this?

Why don't you buy a program from the Mac App Store that can complete your work that you started with Photoshop? Many of us use Pixelmator ($29.99 in the Mac App Store) which is powerful and fairly easy to use after some learning.
