chscag, The iMac did start up with a "restart" from the Safe mode & I checked Systems Preferences /Users& Groups and it shows that I am active and "Guest User" is "Sharing Only" --I have no idea who/what that is or could be. Under Log-in items I found 2 apps checked to run on log-in: Eye-TV (I used that years ago & so deleted it & "DevDetectListener" which I do not know anything about so left it alone. I then tried to navigate in the Finder to find the Library or Start- up Items & could not navigate to either. So, I checked the "Activity Monitor" & found one possible problem: it showed the "X11" app had been modified at about the time the iMac crashed (10 Apr, 3:38PM). It has 5.4MB but I could not tell anything else about it. I am writing this still in normal mode but the windows started fragmenting and it is really unusable now, So, will post this for your analysis. Sorry I could not figure out how to dig deeper into the OS. BTW what anti-virus and other maintenance programs do you recommend for iMacs, Powerbooks & iPads? Thanks! Jim
