When surfing in many forums & areas the back button <> in Safari doesn't take me back to the last page! I have to close the page with the red X button at the top left & Safari quits! Do I have a setting wrong in preferences...or what??

Happy 4th All!

So this is either systemic or specific to the Safari app.
I would start by checking the operating system with Disk Utility and if no problems are found try starting up in Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. If not it may be an extension or malware may have been introduced.
These are just general suggestions because you have not supplied your device or system details.

Do you have Safari se to open new pages in a new tab? If so the back arrow will only work if the tab you are in has been used to look at other pages. So lets suppose you have this site in one tab and have looked at several pages. You now open a second tab whether it is on this site or elsewhere doesn't matter. To get to the other set of pages you have to click on the first tab and then use the back button or use the History menu in Safari to select the page you want.

I'm not sure I understand that, but I'll fool around with that preference & maybe "a light will go on" & I'll get it! LOL! Thanx!

I notice it most when going through pages in a forum & then there is a URL to go to! When I open the URL document the only thing to do is close the URL page & then I'm out of Safari & have to start over again opening Safari to get back to where I was.

Here's a video that explains tabs in Safari. If your Safari open new links the way his does it is set to open new pages in tabs. If you are closing these by clicking the red circle that is why everything is going away.

Try this, while in Safari, go to Preferences. Click on the Tabs tab and uncheck "When a new window or tab opens, make it active".
