Ok you can do this. Usually in the form of banner adverts. See the top right of all pages in this forum. The current one is advertising bandwidth for iWeb technologies. The way that this usually works is that the company will supply the banner and all the required code and all you do is add it to your website. However no company is likely to want to advertise on a site without first viewing it and it's content. They don't want to be associated with something crud. So once you have convinced a company to supply you with a banner you need to make sure that your website is being visited. The company that supplied you with the banner will then usually give you a small fee for each referral. i.e. A person visits your website and then clicks the banner. That person then signs up to whatever service the banner is advertising and the company then gives you a small fee for referring them on. The downside is that you need to refer a lot of people each month to make any real money. The websites that I know that do this only make about £10 a month. Maybe enough to pay some of the hosting costs of the website. Certainly not enough to live off of. You would need to find some other way of making money to live off of. I really do hope that your project takes off. If you want any more advice please just ask.
