To run applications in the 1080p mode (in this case) on the external monitor or TV, once this is selected on the external monitor, you set up both boxes (one for MBP screen and the other for the external monitor) side by side in system preferences graphics.
Thanks idrinorbarsaku I have just come off the phone from Apple Care. Problem solved. It appears you cannot show the dock or any programs directly on the monitor unless you are in "mirror" mode because the most you can show is the default resolution for the MBP. I am sure you all know that as well as I do. To run applications in the 1080p mode (in this case) on the external monitor or TV, once this is selected on the external monitor, you set up both boxes (one for MBP screen and the other for the external monitor) side by side in system preferences graphics. Then, you open up the application on the MBP and drag it from the MBP to the external monitor. I need to be able to video edit on a larger screen to get the accuracy for editing down to single frames.
