Is there any way to stop my iMac from pretending my external drives have been disconnected incorrectly please?

Every so often, I get a pop-up notification saying they have disconnected improperly. Since the message appears again an hour or so later, it seems clear the drives were not really disconnected - or they would not be able to disconnect again.

This is an early 2008 iMac running El Capitan :)

The Eternal Drives are my Time Machine drive and a USB memory stick.

Some things to try:

- Reboot the computer.
- Do an SMC Reset.
- Do an NVRAM/PRAM Reset.
- Run Onyx.

Maybe uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in System Preferences > Energy Saver?
