Encrypt USB flash drive

Regarding a 2017 MacBook Pro, OS 10.13.3

Having first changed the USB format to Mac OSX Extended (journaled), I followed the directions to encrypt removable media:

1. Insert USB.
2. In Finder, open a window, then Control-click the itemc(USB) in the sidebar.
3. Choose Encrypt (item name) from the shortcut menu....

But there is no "Encrypt" option in the menu. Am I missing something? Is there another way to encrypt a USB drive?

Where did you get these directions? Did you try a web search?

I went to "discussions.apple" "techmeback" and "theinstructional". These sites present the same procedure (re-format the USB, Control-click to access the encryption option).
