[sorry if I am posting on the wrong area ;) ] I ended up taking my WD external USB HDD in for repair, for corrupted drive heads. Prior to that, I did not notice there was something physically wrong with the drive, so I plugged it into my MacBook Pro. It did not mount the Time Machine partition or the other FAT32 partition, but disk utility recognized them. in a panic I clicked repair on the repair, walked away for 20 minutes and when I came back I saw: "2011-11-07 12:14:31 -0800: Verify and Repair volume “Time Machine Backups ” 2011-11-07 12:14:31 -0800: Starting repair tool: 2011-11-07 12:14:37 -0800: Checking file system2011-11-07 12:15:36 -0800: Volume repair complete.2011-11-07 12:15:36 -0800: Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.2011-11-07 12:16:57 -0800: Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.2011-11-07 12:16:57 -0800: 2011-11-07 12:16:57 -0800: Disk Utility stopped repairing “disk1s1”: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files. This Time Machine partition was no longer visible, only the FAT32 partition was. If the drive heads are replaced, can that missing partition be recovered? Thanks.
